Eritrean Charity to Extend Assistance to Victims of Trafficking

(London 17th May 2013) Release Eritrea is to extend its support to victims of trafficking through two projects in Egypt and Israel respectively. The projects which have been funded for three years starting this month will build on the work that was carried out over the last two years enabling local staff and volunteers to provide relevant services as identified by those already engaged in the field.

Since its inception in 2002 Release Eeritrea developed its services to support identified needs of victims of religious and human rights persecution in Eritrea and across the region where refugees have scattered.

Project Halawi Hawey (My Brother’s keeper) works in Egyptian prisons providing medical assistance, food, clothing and toiletries to Eritrean victims of trafficking. In addition the project is able to provide, emergency provision and legal assistance services for those who have been stranded after escaping their trafficking captors.  Halawi Hawey has been in operation for two years and has assisted hundreds of victims during that time.

In Israel, Release Eritrea will work in partnership with the Tel Aviv Eritrean Women’s Centre, to provide family support services for Eritrean women and their families. The Centre offers a wide range of practical, emotional and spiritual support to women survivors of human trafficking and their families. Eritrean refugees in Israel are not offered assistance or protection guaranteed under the UN Refugee Convention, many become destitute and relay on the support offered by fellow refugees.

The two projects will complement the other support services that the organisation provides Eritrean victims of human rights violations in Eritrea and Kenya.
