Eritrea's Exiled Afar Opposition Deny They Intend To Secede

Write e-mail Print
October 23, 2010 (MEKELLE, Ethiopia) – Ethiopia-based Eritrean opposition group, the Red Sea Afar Democratic Organization (RSADO) denied they had any intention to secede from the Red Sea nation despite statements released this week reaffirming its attachment to the principle of self-determination

In a press release issued on Thursday RSADO said that it would ‘not compromise on its principles for self determination in Eritrea with anyone whether those opposed to regime in Asmara or Eritrean Regime itself.’

‘There will not be a unified Eritrea, unless the right for self-rule is constitutionally guaranteed for Red Sea Afar and rest of nationalities in Eritrea. The Red Sea Afar will reserve the rights for Self determination including secession’ said the press release.
However, a spokesperson for the group on Saturday told Sudan Tribune that the group does not intend to break-away from Eritrea and form a new nation.

“We are not declaring intention of secession from Eritrea at this point, however unless the rights of self-determination up to secession is assured on the constitution, the fate of Eritrea might be like Somalia, just another failed state in the region,” Yasin Mohamed Abdela said.

RSADO, well known for cross-border attacks against the Asmara regime, is a member of the Eritrean Democratic Alliance (EDA), an umbrella political organization of ten opposition parties struggling to overthrow President Issayas Afeworki’s government in Eritrea.
In August, 2010, the EDA called for a conference in Addis Ababa, to discuss ways to bring about a democratic change in Eritrea.
At the conference RSADO made its intentions clear to work hand in hand with all parties, by further drafting “Addis Declaration” based on the principle of rule of law and equality of all nationalities in Eritrea.

The conference in principle supported a plan forwarded by RSADO that nations and nationalities within Eritrea had the right to self determination and possible secession. They also proposed placing a federal system of governance in Eritrea in the event that they topple the current government.

“Despite the reached agreement some opposition officials and Eritrean politicians in Diaspora, who participated in Addis Ababa conference, have lately began obstructing the agreement” the spokesman said.

The Statement by the group also said that, “recent maneuverings by some in the opposition camps and the regime’s loyalist[s] in [the] Diaspora [had] expressed their opposition to self determinations for nation and nationalities.”
The rebel official vowed to scale up the armed struggle against Asmara until the rights of self-determination including secession from Eritrea was respected.

Eritrean Red Sea Afars, an ethnic minority in with a nomadic life style, remain one of the most highly persecuted ethnicities in the country, as the coastal area they live in holds strategic and economic value.

They have repeatedly accused Eritrean government of launching an ethnic cleansing against them.

According to Eritrean Print and Oral Culture quoting Eritrea: A Country Handbook, by the Ministry of Information of Eritrea:
"Eritrean Afars, also known as Dankils, live mainly along the southeastern sea coast and on the offshore islands in a highly-segmented, patrilineal society. Afars inhabit one of the least hospitable terrains on earth and are renowned for their prowess in battle. They have a long history of independent sultanates and strong warrior traditions. Many of their songs and much of their oral literature is built on this, and it is still common to see Afar men wearing the jile or curved knife. Today, most are herders, traders, or artisanal fishers. Pastoral Afar families typically live in large hemispherical houses of hides and woven mats stretched across a framework of wooden poles that can be carried by camel over long distances. In the few oases in Afar territory, the people cultivate maize and tobacco. Traders carry slabs of salt on their camels to the highlands from long-dried salt pans by the sea."

An answer for 'truth',14. First of all, you are not an Eritrean, thus I urge you not to use 'we Eritreans'. We fought to realize a united, independent and prosperous country, actuall y the State of Eritrea. And we got it. why is it becoming a headache for all of our enemies, a United and strong Eritrea? Leave us alone. Eritrea is for Eritreans. We said our unity is our strength, we have paid a heavy price, a price of thousands of our beloved brothers, sister s,fathers and mothers to realize a united Eritrea. And that is what we gain.

+6 #14 truth 2010-10-26 09:33
what did eritreans gain from an independent eritrea? the truth is nothing. so why do we need to have a unified eritrea in the first place? no one can come up with one reason, except he will tell you 'we need a unified eritrea, because so many has died for it". if this is not funny enough, then which one could be so funny at all?

You may bark, but you won't win, because evil intentions have never won before. As for us, we Eritreans need to be vigilant and foil the evil intentions and stand firm against all conspiracies which might come from our long time enemies. God bless the people and nation of Eritrea.

Open your mind and hear if you have ears functioning Tell Me

Yes, a change not imposed by crude creatures, but a change that the people of Eritrea choose. If the Afars, Kunama, Nara, Bilen, Tigre, etc. can choose whatever language they choose not a language that you choose for them. Eitreans should be free to choose whatever they like. I don't hinder you from choosing Tigrina so why do I hider the others to choose whatever they like. Why do you want to dictate to others to choose what you prescribe for them.

Mr. Tell me you are still far from accepting the freedom of others that is the reason I said you are crude and grown up crookedly. You are beyond repair.

Thank you for your responses. I am new and learning a lot.
It is true change is coming. A change where history and all basic rights are respected. A change where Janjaweed evils are condemned; a change where all Eritrean languages are respected above aliens and are treated equal; a change where all women are treated with dignity; a change where the young kunama, afar, nara, saho ... can proudly study in her own language ...
Eritreans deserve a lot of progressive change.
Please, tell me of more changes coming to Eritrea.
Thank you

Instead of eplf helping the afar in Ethiopia to their freedom and tplf helping the afars in Eritrea, it is time to cut the bulshit and start working with the one who are under your occupation or controll. I can guarantee you our crulity towards other ethnic groups emanated most of the time is by our ignorance. The freedom of Afar is a solution not a burden. Free Afar! The freedom or equality of our differnet ethnic groups has nothing to do with seccession rather the opposit.

No worry, our creators the Egyptians will rescue us for their own sake...or will they?..I hear that Egyptian authorities are under pressure from their own intellectuals to change their age old tactic of mischief against Ethiopians and instead to strengthen economic corporations....It looks like Eritrea has been used as a disposable tool, but who is gana pick it up, tonight.... ooooww.....this can't go oon, who's gona lift you uuup,..Iraan, oooowwww ....the drive..

A message to Tell Me

I will tell you are unable to own the 21st century mentality. You are living in the past and you will crumble soon. The kingdom you believe is strong and protect what you have robbed will collapse.

If you read well what is the reality in Eritrea you wouldn't speak in such a way. The people of Eritrea will not keep quiet for the mess you are doing in Eritrea. Wake up men before you are totally implicated into a dilemma. You have to read carefully how you have reached to this stage. You didn't reached through hard work but through crooked ways and those whom you cheated now knew what you have done and are ready to respond with all their might. Time has changed but you fail to change and perishing is your fate.

What Ethiopia should do is to help the development of self rule and to increase the economic participation of Ethiopian Afars. This is a formidable weapon against the chauvinists in Asmara, who see no other way to rule Eritrea than by subjugating the smaller ethnic groups.
Eritrean Afars see the gradual improvement of the life of Ethiopian Afars and the role they are playing in their daily affairs, and they do not want to accept a different fate for themselves and their children, however they may be persecuted by the Eritrean chauvinists.
The second stage is unification with their kins across the boarder, so that their rights will be respected, their language, culture and tradition will flourish, without any sort of impediment. Afars know very well that their land and their people are divided by force and they do not accept this status quo .

+1 #2 tell me 2010-10-24 17:18
Please, tell me why the Kunamas should be part of Eritrea where a Janjawid monster is the nations "hero"?
Tell me, why the languages of kunama, Saho, Afar ... be treated like a trash while an alien language is worshiped in their own land? Please, tell me.

+1 #1 tell me 2010-10-24 17:09
Tell me, why the Afars should be part of Eritrea? The Afars will look after their language, history and identity in a greater Afar.
This is also true to Kunamas and Saho. Tell me why these groups should live in a country where some are ashamed of their own languages such as Tigre-Tigrina. Please, tell me.

Eritrea's 20th Anniversary - Haunted By Perceptions or Reality?

Eritrea's 20th Anniversary - Haunted By Perceptions or Reality?

Eritrea celebrates its 20th anniversary of independence on Friday with state-run media describing festivities across the country. But Amnesty International has decried the alleged human rights abuses committed by the one-party government run by President Isaias Afewerki, asserting that some 10,000 people are being held in jails.

Eritrea Media Sustainability Index, 2012

The rapid advancement in media technology has opened up world media, making it increasingly difficult to conceal what is going on within the borders of a totalitarian state. Eritrea remains one of the few states in the world to successfully isolate its people from global information exchange. Under the slogan “Serving the Truth,” Eritrean media are managed entirely by the Ministry of Information. The ministry simply manufactures and disseminates government propaganda, stifling alternative views while protecting the country’s leadership.

There are calls to expel Eritrea's top diplomat in Canada because he presides over a system that's milking money from the Eritrean community in this country.

Evidence obtained by CBC News suggests Consul Semere Ghebremariam O. Micael is again soliciting taxes despite a threat by Canada eight months ago not to renew his credentials if he kept at it.

But one Eritrean in Toronto, who has asked not to be identified, tells the CBC it was business as usual just a few weeks later when he had to pay.

Eritrean Child Prisoners Join Hunger Strike in Aswan Prison

Yesterday, a large group of Eritrean prisoners in an Aswan prison concluded a three-day hunger strike, in desperation protesting their continued incarceration without charge or trial.  They were joined by some of the young children incarcerated with their mothers in the prison.  The Government of Egypt has apparently accepted that they are victims of human trafficking, brought into Egypt against their will, yet they are not being released after many months.  The prisoners report poor conditions in the prison, and a lack of food and access to medicine and treatment.  ...

The Disappearance of Sudan

The Disappearance of Sudan

In this context, the renewal of Sudanese citizenship is vital if further rupture between the Sudanese peoples and, ultimately, the further physical disintegration of the state, are to be avoided.

However, and as the report contends, this renewal can only be achieved by ending the violence that is currently targeted overwhelmingly at marginalised communities; transforming practice, policy and law around the construction of a genuinely non-discriminatory and fully participatory Sudanese citizenship; and committing to the creation of an all-Sudan political and constitutional process that allows grievances and programmes for change from the margins to be heard and heeded.

Documents show Eritrea defying Canadian government by using Toronto consulate to raise money for regime

But nine months later, evidence gathered by an Eritrean-Canadian human rights group shows the practice has continued: As recently as January the consulate issued forms demanding payment for Eritrea’s “national defence against Ethiopian invasion.”

The documents also show the consulate is still imposing a 2% income tax on Eritrean-Canadians — a practice Ottawa had also insisted had to end after the RCMP and UN reported that those who refused to pay were subjected to threats, intimidation and coercion.

“We take these allegations very seriously, and are currently working to determine if the Eritrean consulate is continuing to disregard Canadian law,” Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird’s press secretary, Rick Roth, said Tuesday.

“We have clearly communicated to the Eritrean government our concerns both in Ottawa, and Eritrea. We expect the Eritrean government not to test our resolve. These actions, if true, will have repercussions.”

Independent UN expert stresses need to improve human rights situation in Eritrea

“I am particularly concerned about the increasing number of unaccompanied children crossing the border without the knowledge of their families,” Ms. Keetharuth said. “Children regularly mentioned dysfunctional family circumstances due to the long absence of the father, most of the time because of conscription, lack of educational opportunities and the fear of forced conscription into indefinite national service as major reasons for their decisions to flee.”

The Special Rapporteur voiced particular concern about the indefinite national service, the ongoing practice of arbitrary arrest and incommunicado detention in inhumane conditions and widespread torture, both physical and psychological, during interrogation by the police, military and security forces. Mere suspicion appears to be enough for somebody to be subjected to interrogation and detention without charge or without being brought before a court of law.

Anger in Ethiopia after Eritrea supports Egypt’s “right” to Nile water

ADDIS ABABA: Anger is fomenting in Ethiopia following last month’s statements from the Eritrean government over who has a right to Nile River water, which has become a contentious issue in recent years between Ethiopia and Egypt, who claims the lion’s share of water from the world’s largest waterway.

The Eritrean government said in April that it supported Egypt’s position over a controversial colonial-era treaty that grants Egypt a right a majority of the Nile’s water resources. ...

The Egyptian president, Mohamed Morsi, has highly welcomed Eritrea’s position towards Egypt’s “historic rights” over the sharing of the water of the Nile River.

Eritrean women face threat of abuse even after they leave: report

Eritrean women face threat of abuse even after they leave: report

April 28, 2013 (KHARTOUM) - Eritrean women fleeing their country’s oppressive regime are increasingly finding themselves the repeat victim of abuse, exploitation and violence once outside their homeland, a new report by a women’s rights group has found.

The deeply personal stories highlight the often traumatic circumstances surrounding women’s departure from their homeland, which is further compounded by economic hardship and ongoing rights abuses suffered in their host countries.

“Kedusan” told SIHA researchers that she fled to Sudan after her husband crossed to Ethiopia to avoid military conscription and she herself was imprisoned as punishment. After reaching the border she was handed over to a group of smugglers, one of whom raped her in front of her two-year-old daughter after they were left alone together.

She later fell pregnant as a result and although she says she reported the rape to the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR), she says she was offered little assistance.

She later managed to make her way to Khartoum where she found work, but when her husband came to find her he abandoned her after learning about the rape and pregnancy.
