Ethiopians, Eritreans eager to mend broken fences

Ethiopian and Eritrean scholars took turns to lay the blame for the separation of the Ethiopian and Eritrean people on dictatorial rulers and extremist “liberation fronts” that took secession as the only viable solution to a complex problem. Speaking at the Ethiopian and Eritrean Friendship Conference in San Jose, California, which was held from March 12-14, panelists and members of the public emphasized the need to start a process of healing, renewal and normalization of people to people relations as the feeling of enmity were created and fuelled by succeeding rulers and elites that never represent the interests and desires of their people.

Opening the conference, Dr Worku Negash, who moderated the dialogue without taking sides on behalf of the Stanford Ethiopian Forum, noted that the unique gathering was a beginning in the right direction to normalize the toxic relations between Ethiopians and Eritreans, who have been through so much conflicts and pains due to their tragic past.

Eritrean Professor Mesfin Araya of City University of New York said that the Eritrean middle class that blindly rallied around Isaias Afeworki and the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front committed a “collective suicide in post-independence Eritrea.”

He noted that even during the Eritrean referendum, there had never been a public debate on the available options to resolve the Eritrean question. “It was merely the EPLF’s agenda that was carried out with TPLF. The intellectual class never demanded a public debate over the cost and benefits of independence,” he said.

According to Professor Mesfin, the Eritrean intelligentsia should particularly take the responsibility for sheepishly allowing the political class led by the EPLF to impose its narrow will and opt for the territorial independence of Eritrea without involving and consulting the people. “Spinelessly, the intellectual class backed EPLF actions to support the referendum in the total absence of democratic debates.” The Professor, who was bluntly honest, pointed out that it would be logical to argue that the Eritrean referendum was not really authentic.

Professor Mesfin also questioned the motive and wisdom of the Eritrean business class to opt for separation in spite of the fact that a significant number of its members had comfortable lives and thriving businesses within Ethiopia since the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie. “Normally, one would expect that the Eritrean business class, driven by self-interest, would seek a bigger and expanding market. Why they have chosen to confine themselves to a much narrower market is incomprehensible.” The professor went on to say that the business and intellectual classes in post-independence Eritrea ended up paying a heavy price because of their myopic miscalculations.

“Monopolizing business activities, EPLF has almost wiped out the Eritrean business class. The wealthy Eritrean business people of the good old days are no more there,” he said. Professor Mesfin underscored the fact that those Eritrean intellectuals and business people, who had given unwarranted support to independence, have now been losers confronting a crisis of hegemony as well as political, economic and social problems in liberated Eritrea under Isaias Afeworki, who has turned the nation into a pariah state.

The professor pointed out that the Horn of Africa, which has been facing cyclic tyranny and poverty, has a potential to unify gradually on condition that the sub-region is free from destructive and divisive tyrannies. For that to happen, according to Professor Mesfin, the intellectual class need to reflect on its past mistakes and develop the capacity to “dream big and beautiful” to reconcile with its tragic past and envision a better future for generations to come.

Another Eritrean scholar, Professor Tesfatsion Medhanie, who teaches politics and law at Bremen University, Germany, on his part tried to analyse why Ethiopia and Eritrea were separated and how they can start a process of reunification that can lead up to federation. According to him, the main cause of the conflict between the Ethiopian state and Eritrean nationalists was mainly a result of the decision taken by Emperor Haile Selassie to dissolve Eritrea’s federal status in 1962.

The professor went on to claim that the ruling elites, both in Ethiopia and Eritrea, were not ready for rational solutions as they held extremist views akin to Manichaeism, which sees the world as a struggle between the forces of good and evil. Professor Tesfatsion identified the current rulers of both nations as tyrannical that did not even allow popular debates and dialogues on the question of Eritrea. He also admitted the fact that the separation of Eritrea was not done in a legitimate and just manner but emphasized that people have to accept the current reality.

While TPLF sees itself as the champion of Eritrean independence but with a sinister motive, the EPLF, backed by the TPLF, has taken an unscientific view that claimed that the Ethio-Eritrean problem was a colonial issue. Professor Tesfatsion said that both Eritreans and Ethiopians, who have suffered a great deal as a result of their terrible history of conflict and hostility, need to make efforts to treat and understand one another with “deep sense of sympathy.” He also lambasted Ethiopian opposition groups who naively believe that Eritrean dictator Isaias Afeworki would genuinely help liberate Ethiopia. He said it was insensitive on the part of some Ethiopian groups and individuals who have gone to the extent of naming the Eritrean tyrant Isaias Afeworki person of the year.

The professor said that Ethiopians and Eritreans, should the pre-conditions be fulfilled, need to consider an “open confederation” that can lead to reunion based on a fair federal arrangement.

Historian Dr Daniel Kindie, argued that federation, in stead of confederation, was much more plausible than confederation given the history of the two nations. Dr Daniel laced his argument with a historical context by emphasizing on the root causes of tensions and conflicts that were deliberately created and sustained by colonial powers especially the British Empire that has deliberately sowed deadly divisions and conflicts among the people of Africa.

One of the founders of the Tigray People Liberation Front, Dr. Aregawi Berhe, who resides in The Hague and is currently a researcher at Leiden University, spoke about the “horrendous looting and plundering” being committed by Meles Zenawi and his cronies. According to Dr. Aregawi, the main obstacles for peace, reconciliation and unity in the Horn of Africa are the ruthless rulers robbing and messing up the poor people.

He said that the most important precondition for co-operation and reconciliation between the oppressed people of Ethiopia and Eritrea is freedom. “Under these dictatorial regimes, neither confederation nor federation can be viable alternatives,” he noted.

Executive director of the Solidarity Movement for a New Ethiopia, Obang Metho took the podium and delivered a rousing speech that touched the hearts of so many people. After talking about his own experience of being treated differently by fellow Ethiopians because of the colour of his skin, Obang highlighted the need to focus more on our humanity than ethnic origins, commonness rather than differences as people of one nation.

Obang pointed out that there was an urgent need for healing among Ethiopians and Eritreans who have been subjected to extremely traumatic suffering and bloodshed. He said that people should go through four phases of transitions: awareness of the truth, transformation, healing and embracing one another with wholehearted compassion and forgiveness.

Jawar Mohammed talked about the need to challenge tyranny through nonviolence, which has proven to be a potent force of change across the world. In a well-articulated presentation, he forcefully advocated that opposition groups need to adapt nonviolent struggle as a means to bring about change in Ethiopia. According to Jawar, nonviolent strategies and tactics have yet to be employed to mobilize people to confront and disobey those who are abusing them in a well-coordinated and systematic manner.

On my part, I emphasized on the need to confront the truth to start a process of healing and reconciliation as well as taking Ethio-Eritrean initiatives at grassroots levels that can deepen trust and eventually help rebuild the broken bridges and bonds between the two nations.

Other panelists and members of the public lined up to speak out their divergent views on issues related to Ethio-Eritrean relations and the prevailing realities in the two nations. While the majority of participants have expressed their delight with the start of such a unique dialogue which can eventually lead to repair the damage done on Ethio-Eritrean relations, there were also few suspected supporters of the TPLF who exhibited their lack of civility and intolerance to freedom of expression. A couple of them were seen hurling tantrums, shaking their fists and pulling out their hairs in a futile bid to intimidate participants, including myself, from expressing honest views. Despite all that, the conference was concluded without any serious incident and renewed hope for a better future.

At the conclusion of the three-day conference, special plaques were presented to Professor Tesfatsion Medhanie and Dr. Daniel Kindie for their extraordinary effort to promote peace and reconciliation between Eritreans and Ethiopians. Other members of the panel were also awarded certificates of commendations.

what ethiopian say about ISSAYAS the GREAT
know you guys will fart by this post but it is true Issayas would have done based his record in Eritrea the last 20 years.

If Issayas was Ethiopia PM 20 years ago, he would not give away Ethiopian lands to Sudan despite he was financed his struggle by Sudan.

Issayas would not sale Ethiopian lands to foreign countries at any cost, rather he could have mobilize all Ethiopians to work harder and brought a lot of tractors and push Ethiopian skilled people to work in the fields and eradicated starvation from the face of Ethiopia 10 years ago.

Issayas could not accept any donations or beg any country on behalf of Ethiopia, he rather produces enough crops to feed all Ethiopians and export the extra crops produced in the country.

Issayas would not the slave of American and invaded Somalia for the interest of America rather he may take over the whole Somalia and united with Ethiopia to stabilize the region.

Issayas would not allow any Ethiopian to loot Ethiopian treasuries and allow anyone to import fancy goods from abroad by embezzling Ethiopian hard currency reserve.

Issayas would never install his wife to run any company as CEO

Issayas would not allow any foreign religions other than the traditional religions existed for centuries in Ethiopia.

Issays would not allow all the Mosque built in every corner of Addis Ababa and other cities around the country.

Issayas would not allow Idol and break dance the ghetto culture and weird hair style our men have today in Ethiopia to destroy the youth brains.

Ethiopia could have been in a good hand and strong father, not orphan fatherless Ethiopia today.

Ethiopia would not have paid over $10 billion dollars for port fees since we would have our own ports.

ONLF, OLF TPDM, EPP, G7 and others would not have existed today and making all the troubles Ethiopians are facing and spending all the resources and death of so many people in those regions.

Ethiopia would not have war against Shaebia and wasted over $3 billion dollars and over 100k Ethiopians died and buried at the borders.

Most likely Issayas could have change Ethiopian national language from Amharic to English to accommodate all ethnics on fare ground to advance Ethiopian youths.

To those woyane puppets who are writing acting like ERITREANS 24hrs a day and for years who are Crying and Insulting people for nothing----

HIDRI OF OUR MARTYRED BROTHERS – SISTERS – MOTHERS – FATHERS ALONA

PROUD OF BEING ERITREAN ( AWET NIHAFASH )

No one could think or put in mind that Eritrean nationals could betray his / her own MARTYR’S who have given their precious lives in order to liberate the Eritrean people out from misery, out of slavery of various dirty acts of the former Ethiopian colonizers ? We never have forgotten the days when we were considered as a second citizenship at our own country and at our own lands? Referring to our Eritrean liberation struggle’s history, Eritrean nationalities by nature they had never had such attitudes to show-up of ugly behaviors and insulting their brothers or writing unbelievable fake stories against any Eritrean, or under any conditions displaying a tricky computer graphic generated and constructing unwanted fake pictures against their own country. What I know is Eritreans are devoted for their country, courageous united – polite people, whom they never wish or try and dream some one’s property.

It is extremely dubious about this unknown rude and corrupted mind that are continuously insulting 24 hours a day against our brave Eritrean population and to our dynamic leaders, by hiding themselves under the dark window curtains of the Woyane of Tigray web site. By the way how does one can be sure that these writers are really Eritreans or the woyane dirty campaigners. Every Eritrean knows very well behind and beyond the horizon about these ghost writers dream. That is why we often use to say that there is no a single Eritrean national who do this kind of rude, filthy that has no any truth and ugly mails.

The truth is no a single Eritrean unless one if he is SICK. Hence under what’s ever conditions there is no a single Eritrean with two hearts to rise up against own country or intend to bleed his own family – his own people and his own population, this is the truth which I experience with in the range of my life, absolutely no. Our Eritrean heritage under what’s ever condition has never allowed us to harm or to do bad do against our beloved expensive country. It seems that these un identified people who are hiding themselves under cover of the un Eritrean web site the so called asmarino (the main Woyane propaganda machinery) who are easily crying and insulting our Eritrean people are really lacking a common sense.

Reading their fake stories and fake pictures made by a computer graphics and propagated through their e-mail do they wanted the Eritreans to forget and deny our martyrs who brought us from the total darkness and slavery to the total brighter light. Or do they want us to shift for the sake of their evil dreams. Eritreans. I thing these people have some parties are misguiding them to serve for their mysterious unexplained or a hidden agenda with a corporate designs prepared by the west against our country Eritrea. Therefore what I wanted to assure to the ghost writers what I would say to them is don’t try to consider that the Eritrean people are not foolish like you or as a dummy to accept for your unknown hidden pointless, and shameful cries from unidentified location from their hiding.

Tewoldeberhan habtay.

Brocken Fences well Mended

When the Independence of Eritrea was declared and Eritrea became free country and a member of the world community " Un member and its flag waving bright and high, when the Eritreans celebrated their independence and concluded that their strea of blood was not in vain, that was the fence was put and well mended. No more trouble , No more, intimidattion, no more Napalm Gas on our head, No more destruction to our houses and property and No more massacre by Ethiopian thanks, when the fence was put by the Heroic Eritreans. So professors just go to bed, rest assured that there is no ear from the Eritrean side to listen to your bulshit talk. Eritreans and ethiopians should work for good neighbourliness - yes. but No tress pas into Eritrean life. the mended fence is sealed to keep us safe.

Simret,
I bet you wouldn't dare living in your beautiful Eritrea. would you? The truth of the matter is Eritrea is in worse situation than your mostly fabricated past injustice. Ask any fair minded eritrean of old age, they miss both colonizers, Italy and haileselase. I am not sure about Mengistu, but at least some think even his ear is your independent Eritrea..

what do you mean. there is no catch word in your comment. Are u against Eritreans . epfdj. Then go to hell. Quoting Yohan:
Webster difines the word "Hijack" as to rob, steal, swindle, extort. It could be by force, trick, intimidation, threat, modern day electonic fraud, blckmail, creati ve/sophisticated/complex evil trading methods...etc. What seems to be happening over and over is that the Eritrean and Ethiopian "Madoffs" have been working overtime to hijack constructive issues of discussion, nurturing community centers, house of worships..etc. These contol frick/ schizophrenic people are always determined to have the last word as their "Fuhrer" of Eritrea. For the record, check every city in the western world, Middle East, Asea and Africa, their role as "Zeragito" or even the school yard bully is so obvious but very trojan horse like when they begin the process of total control. On a discussion to jump start the dormant reconciliation process of "people to people", they have already hijacked it to become more of a PRIMITIVE NATURE of clanish, tribal, ethnic, regional with the meaningless words such as " Tigrigna, Agame Amharai, Eritrawi and other ignorant and arrogant phrases. Oh boy oh boy, I think we have a long way to go to catch up with the 21st century from the Dejazmach Wube or higdef era. Yes, it is the nature and nurture of a bully or dictator to control everything and anything provided that everyone acts and behaves like a doormat. Hitler started with Poland, Mussolini started with Eritrea, Albania and Ethiopia, but were they satisfied with what was given to them for appeasement purposes? What makes the Mugabes, the Essayas, the Ghadaffis, the Ahmedinejads, the Chaves,, the Kims and YES the great homeopathic miracle maker phd ruler of Gabbia Jammeh ...etc happy is when anything and everything is under their FULL CONTROL. In order to make that happen, they will lie, intimidate, deport, threaten, trick, cheat, promise, buy, kill, jail, freeze, sell, suspend, rent, nationalize, dethaw, poison, destroy, eliminate, lease...whatever it takes to take FULL CONTROL OF THEIR PREY, be it a country, person, organization, mom-and-pop busines, village, tribe, comrade, relative, best friend/girl friend/wife, church, mosque, community center, business interprise, entrepreneurs, merchants, street peddlers...etc. All these and more crimes and mischiefs are implimented by their die hard followers who eventually get the axe or "Halengy" while serving their ruler confidently. As surprising as it may sound, when it happens to them, Just remember "What goes around comes around" or " Kulu eidu erekib" or you get your karma in this life. FYI find out who were Atnafu Abate, Banti, Solomon, Trotsky, Jiang Qing...etc. If the very loyal and super trusted right handmen/women can receive the axe at any unforeseeable time and place, what makes you, the remote diaspora and the low level followers, think you can be spared? Thanks

Prof. mesfin's paper is very shallow. He is telling us why eritreans who lived in Ethiopia supported independence and for that they paid heavy price. This is were he proved to be the supporter of the deportation. Eritreans or any person will chose independence and freedom from colonial rule. Any one on earth would it against colonialism. Period. so Eritreans regardles where they lived they have the right to choose. Ethiopians deported eritreans because they envy their successin Ethiopia and that is why the Woyane and supporters like prf. Mesfin deported Eritreans intentionally to confisicate thei wealth and property of Eritreans. They did not deport them but they stole their bleongings systematically. If that is the price to pay let it be. Freedom is not measured by million Eth. Birr. Living in Ethioopia for an Eritrean was notthe first choice. the first choice our rights , dignity, and freedom and we have got it.I am sure ther may be some Eritreans who did not vote int he referendum but still marginalised in Ethiopia for being Eritreans. So his argument is invalid and shallow.Eritreans who lived in Ethiopia acumalated their wealth in a generation. since the 1960, some in the 1970 . It was not an overnight achievement. After deporation Eritreans did not come with their money and their belongings./ they were deported bare hand, their, properties, savings and minor beloonings left behind. when they came to Eritrea they have to start it from scratch. Of course it takes time before they can sprung up but some have already managed. small makret Eritrea is not even a factor. Market is now international and regional. The only problem is that Prf. Mesfin's Ethiopia always wanted war not peace that has hindered development in the region. So I feel ashamed for his shallow thinking about every think. Eritreans are going to sprung up with success, in business and other development achievements. When Ethiopia makes peace withitself first and in the region then business is regional not only internal . No country in Europe has an econmy dependent only on internal activities. america canot live without china or world trade. But the profes wants us to believe the market in Ethiopia is the only market Eritreans could work and trive in business because we are federated with Ethiopia. It is laughing stock. No one apart the people of eritrea can decide on the fate of our country and our people. Enough is Enough professors you just chart your papers with your pens but no ear to listen to you.
I am sure Eritreans, the real Eritreans should read your history and never fall pray to the maliciouse speeches of the false profs. Eritreans should take of their independence, freedom and soverignity. The best thing we can do in this is learn our histry, respect each other, know thepast, presentenemies of Eritrea and future threats to our existence.

Long live Eritrean peopleand out beautiful Independent Eritrea

a continuation to my comments No 95
who those who discuss Eritrea in the absence of the Real Eritreans?
They call thmselves profesors. Tesfatsion is notan Eritrean . But I do not care weather he is Eritrean or Ethiopian. I can see he is one of the ethiopians profs. her on the conference.
I knew about him in the 1980's when he was the enemeny of the EPLF and the Eritrean people. During the hardes time the Struggle days, when Eritreans were paying their lives in a war zone, bombarded , massacred, their villages burned to ashes, people and women runover by Ethiopian thanks, when old people where burned inside their homes, he wrote a book in Tigirnia entitled " QALSI HIZBI ERITRA QULQUL AFU TEDEFI'u". IN his book he made mockery of the strugle in general, insulting and making moeckery of the sacrifices tegadelti and the people were paying. He made mockery of everything, the achievement, the creativitity of the people, the perseverance and the bravery, the unity, the ismall industrial efforts to made by EPLF to support the struggle were a material for his book and for his mockery. I can never see an educated person resort only to insult and mockery when the people were in burning land. He had no sympathy. He proved to be the most ignorant person on earth. If he had reason to be critical , it should have done it in a sensible way. The book from the begining to the end was full of thousand abusive, insult and mockery.
He does not have a place in Eritrean hearts, and he is not fit even to mention Eritrea and Eritreans. Eritreans have decided for their fate by paying streams of blood and preciouse lives not by charting words in a paper and apear on platforms. He is nothing but desperate peson who is looking for attention. I recomend Eritreans to try to read his books. He was against indepenedent Eritrea from the beginning. so No place for him. He is not brave enough to come Near to us but appear on cyber . He cannot stand on the ground because Eritreans are firmly standing withtheir full head up and their hearts full of pride. If you see him in person tell him a hypocrtic.

The problem is more political than social. A mutual respect and peaceful co-existence between the people of Eritrea and Ethiopia would follow much faster than we could ever imagine at this point, if only this bloody boarder conflict would find a dead end. Both governments seem to be concentrating more on distructing one another rather than on solving the problem. With the virtual demarcation at hand, it should normally be easy to close the chapter for good. The Ehiopian government should abide to the agreements done before and the Eritrean government should sit and talk on the materialization of the demarcation on the ground. This relactance leaves the impression that these governments need to keep this conflict for their own corresponding reasons. As a means of facesaving or extending their stay on power.

PART TWO

After 20 years of woyane rule to day Ethiopia is not as what the readers could expect to see or one can see in return. The woyane are advertising enormous of LIES with so many COLORED and fabricated speaches and fake pictures of meetings and medals presenting as well showing fake video clips that are mostly appearing through their media WTV (the Woyane TV) one of their main public brain washing propaganda machinery system that are good for the woyane millionaires living in a supper deluxe vilas – high rise buildings and in the places with in the range of Addis Abeba only.

The remaining Ethiopian cities except MEKELE all are lying down without any seen movements one can openly see or feel the differences on the ground. Therefore seeing the buildings and some roads inside some places of the city in Addis Ababa one can not be able to justify by seeing the woyane tv –( Not Ethiopian TV ), To day Ethiopia is not as it was Ethiopia before woyane. So the other Ethiopian cities under woyane are staying in the Dark Age.

Every cities has not the necessary public services, such as NO medication – NO clean potable water every cities - NO proper school facilities – NO enough variety of foods and things that are available are supper expensive - NO ELECTRICITY through out the city - Except very few inside the capital city NO proper asphalted roads - NO spare parts for the public requirement - NO public toilets smell is everywhere - City municipality not functioning properly - AIDS epidemic spreads so rapidly among the country’s population. The prostitution is becoming a booming industry it is growing very rapidly in a villages and cities.

Therefore this is what Ethiopia under woyane of Adwa looks like today - woyanes are uneducated and they are not politically un matured regimes. Today Ethiopia is almost the same as it was during the era of Haileselasie, therefore one can conclude under woyane nothing has been changed to this date. It is the matter of time at this particular moment my unfortunate country Ethiopia under woyane finds itself as if it is in a Dark Age.

INREFERENCE TO THE MAILS I RECIVED THROUGH THE FAKE MAIL ADDRESSES
HERE IS AN ASWER AND OPEN LETTER FOR
Wod eiri – mai cat - wodi asmera and 007 and likes;

PART ONE

I felt very sorry to read your responses; I don’t understand exactly why you guys are angry by my mail? I did not insult any one as what you guys who are anti Eritrea are usually doing. What I use to write was to show up my SOLIDARITY with Eritrea and Eritreans as well with my Eritrean close and intimidate friends who are, however if you read my text very carefully you wouldn’t find any thing wrong that make you or any reader to get angry, in fact I got many support from many Eritrean brothers and friends.

As an Ethiopian I know deeply about the Eritrean cause and their struggle as well their history for the liberation. So the differences that I may have with you the anti Eritrea is I know the history very well and even beyond your expectation and even more better than you. I was born during the reign of the late king Haile selassie.

Therefore Eritrean history was not that much new to me, in fact from the very beginning except those from the central Ethiopia most of the peoples of Gondar province and surrounding had a very clear knowledge about Eritrea in connection to the colonization of the Italian and British empires. Beside all even today I have a highly respected Eritreans Engineers, and doctor’s which are intimate friends whom they were my classmates and we were studying at the faculty of science and research dept at the former Haileselassie University at Addis Abeba (in the end of 1960th ).

I always admire about Eritrean friends because of their unity and for their wonderful understanding that exists among them currently what amazing me is that they are contributing all the resources they can have or get to support their martyr’s families. Really it amazes me so much as I had never seen such ERITREAN UNITY in any part of the world. When ever they meet each other they never talk any thing except how to create things that helps ERITREA. Wonderful I wish if one day could happen among the Ethiopian people as Eritreans brothers and hope and pray to Almighty GOD our Horn of Africa will be peace and live together side by side as a good neighbors with a common interest.

This good example of a good will can not found from any part of Africa except in Eretria only. I hope when Ethiopia is liberated from this Maniac woyanes I will try to find a research to form such kind of generous idea as what Eritrean does. As for me I am Ethiopian and I am very proud of being Ethiopian, however to make it clear and introduce my self to you and your readers I am one of the supporter and member of the EPPF ( Ethiopian Peoples Party Front) that are operating throughout the Amara region and Gonder in particular.

We the EPPF allied with the Tigrayan liberation front are struggling against the troublesome woyane of Adwa clan. But I feel so sorry that my country Ethiopia to remain under these illiterate beggars who sold my country to US. What the worst thing that surprises me is today Ethiopia is leaded by the politically un matured beggars of Tigray clan specially the Adwa thief clan.

We have got each of us a government that deserves for each of us.
One thing should be clear for all of you talked about justice and tyranny that those leaders whether you liked them or hate are a products of our own culture and custem.they did not bring their behavior that they displayed in forms of tyranny from far away planets. They adopted it within our cultures. And thus it is better first to look inside each of us before pointing our fingers to others.

ICER Alert on Afar

ICER Alert on Afar

There is human catastrophe unfolding in Yemen  at this very minute. Two hundred and forty four Eritreans ninety five percent of whom are Afar citizens of Eritrea are in prison some for almost one year. Their crime is simply for entering Yemen without document. Their claim for political asylum until situation at home is improved was completely ignored by the Yemeni authorities and the UNHCR is on the sideline simply watching helpless.

As it is true with most Eritreans, this particular ethnic group is driven out of their traditional areas, prevented from leading their subsistence existence which is fishing on the Red Sea and forcibly conscripted in the open ended military National Service which has become scourge ....

Desperate Situation of Eritrean Afar Refugees in Yemeni City of Al-Hudeyda

Desperate Situation of Eritrean Afar Refugees in Yemeni City of Al-Hudeyda

Regrettably, the 300 Afar refugees are languishing in Al-Hudeyda prison where their lives are trapped in a serious threat. Apart from consistent warnings of forcible return to Eritrea, they are facing communicable diseases caused by contaminated food and water. Amongst them are around 50 Afar refugees are in a grave danger of losing their lives to this disease outbreak.

Unfortunately, the ongoing political uncertainty in Yemen exasperated the situation of Red Sea Afar refugees. Going on almost a year in captivity, they haven’t had any access to UNHCR and Human rights organizations, representatives of Yemeni government or any access to medications and basic needs, which is guaranteed to them under UN Geneva convention on rights of refugees.

Yosief Ghebrehiwet on Smerrr Paltalk on Saturday, May 12

On Saturday, May 12, at 12:00 PM (Los Angeles Time) or 21:00 (Berlin Time) Yosief Ghebrehiwet will give a presentation at Smerr Paltalk. The topic is "The Fallacies of the Democracy Project and Nationhood in the Eritrean Context" In this presentation, the following points will be discussed:

  1. What is wrong with the Democracy Project as practiced by the Opposition? On this part, more than a dozen fallacies will be discussed.
  2. After discussing the notion of "nationhood" in the Eritrean context, this question will be addressed: What is being done to hold Eritrea together as a nation?
  3. After looking at the rationale of the past (the Eritrean revolution) and the present (the opposition) movements regarding (1) and (2), we will look at this question: Given the above fallacies and failings, how do we anchor the Eritrean nation in the future?

ICER APPEAL: Save Eritrean Refugees from Human Smugglers

ICER APPEAL: Save Eritrean Refugees from Human Smugglers

The International Commission on Eritrean Refugees (ICER) would like to appeal to all the political groups in particular to those whose operational base is Ethiopia to give focus on the issues affecting refugees in particular to the shady operation going on in the refugee camps. Frankly, since their base of operation is located stone throw away from Eritrea where the bulk of the refugees originate from we believe they are better placed than most of us to influence events, at least in as far as regulating the flow of persons from the refugee camps in Ethiopia and the Sudan. ...

This being the case, therefore, why is it so difficult for the political parties and in particular those operating from Ethiopia where part of the illegal activities is occurring cannot act in earnest to stop it?  Is it because  they are too preoccupied dealing with the more burning issues, for example, the overthrow of the unrepresentative regime and replacing it with democratic one? ...

Eritrea: The President’s Illness?

Eritrea: The President’s Illness?

The extraordinary story built around the presumed illness of autocratic President Isais Afewerki was meant to cover up his critical political ailment. This became more apparent in the wake of the demolition of three Eritrean army bases by Ethiopian infantry forces in mid March. There was no resistance of any kind from Eritrea’s 200-thousand troops guarding the 1000km-long border with Ethiopia.

Commander-in-Chief Isaias made no convincing waves in the name of national pride or national sovereignty for which he has gone to war in the past with each neighboring state at the drop of a hat. This time, the government, which has long espoused the idea of ‘might is right’, shamelessly confirmed its political and military weaknesses by brushing off the Ethiopian action as a US sponsored “ploy” to divert attention from unsettled boundary demarcation issues still leaving dusty, little Badme in the hands of Ethiopia.

In a flat country a hillock thinks itself a mountain

… but anyway there was a perfect opportunity for us all to roll our eyes and grunt ‘sew tira bilut rasu meta…!’ last week ( when I first started writing this)… over the days that followed International press Freedom Day the world has been learning the dire situation of freedom of press in Eritrea through the various editorials and items filed by freedom loving journalists across the globe… needless to say the engine behind all this are our friends at CPJ… (Committee to Protect Journalists)…their evidence is the fact that millions of Eritreans in Eritrea are denied information independently sourced ... Meanwhile Eritrea kept sinking progressively to the bottom of the Press Freedom Index and when it finally hit rock bottom CPJ alerted the world… and to our utter amazement Thomas Mountain came in huffing and puffing… claiming to be the Messiah of Eritrea’s press freedom… (excuse me while I go roll my eyes and exclaim… Sew Tira Bilut Erasu meTa!!)…

Eritrea: Fathers and Sons and the Grammar of Independence

Eritrea: Fathers and Sons and the Grammar of Independence

In the usual relay race of life, fathers hand over the legacy baton to their sons, and those sons carry it over with all the care it demands with the intention of passing it over to their sons, and so on down to the next generation. In that “baton” are to be found all the heritage that the sons need to know to continue the life journey of their people: history, culture, customs, rule of law, language, religion, myths, stories, collective wisdom and other multi-layered legacies that would sustain their people for generations to come. Any abrupt and total break in passing it over would usher a disaster of epic proportion, for one loses the whole survival kit in the process. ...

Now, if you will, reverse the above mentioned process and imagine the sons contemptuously handing back the baton to their fathers, believing that there is nothing they could learn from it ...

Power Vacuum Seems to Be Eminent in Eritrean Politics, Are We Ready?

Power Vacuum Seems to Be Eminent in Eritrean Politics, Are We Ready?

Eritrean organizations in the Diaspora and in the heart land, to be innovative, responsive and responsible require focusing on a number of leadership, power and influence issues. In a country where democracy prevails the leadership tries its best to inform, influence, and satisfy the peoples’ demands and needs. It is this attitude and practice that is absent in the Eritrean politics. The Eritrean opposition in general seems to lack the vision and management of change and the panic and helplessness observed in the Eritrean power politics in general with the rumor of death of dictator Isaias whether manipulated or not is vivid and clear.  Below are some ideas that I think will help to develop sound strategy, management and assessment of political situation and the need to re-organize.

Mea Culpa, not Defensive Rationalization, is the Right Thing to Do

Mea Culpa, not Defensive Rationalization, is the Right Thing to Do

In highly contentious political joking and tussling environment rumors, misinformation and counter misinformation have found their own niche with devastating long range impact to the nurturing of a healthy political process. The use of “unconfirmed” and “unsubstantiated” information in a journalistic narrative will downgrade the reputation of the news outlet that generated the news, no matter the heroic effort to temper the blow when the “unconfirmed news” is discredited by iron clad evidence to the contrary.

The motivation of the reportage or the reporting organ is not an issue for reporting “unconfirmed news” is one of the tools of modern journalism but the spin and exaggerated extrapolation that explodes out of control due to the trigger “unconfirmed information” and the ensuing collapse of all scenarios built on the original unconfirmed reporting imposes a moral responsibility to genuinely reassess the process of how we deploy and utilize “unconfirmed information” in our new digital media.
