ሰላማዊ ሰልፊ ህይስተን ~ ነሓሰ 16 2010

ኣብ ከተማ ህይስተን ቴክሳስ ብደገፍትን ሚሊሻታትን ስርዓት ፋሽስቲ ኢሳያስ ኣብ ልዕሊ መንእሰይ ጋዜጠኛ ቴድሮስ መንግስቱ ንዝተፈጸመ ገበንን ዓመጽን ንምቅላዕን ነቶም ገበነኛታት ኣብ ሕጊ ንምቅራብን ዝዓለመ ሰልፊ ምኻኑ ከነነጽር ንደሊ።

እዚ ሰልፊ’ዚ መበገሲኡ ማሕበር ኤርትራዊያን ንፍትሕን ንዲሞክራስን ምዕባለን ይኹን እንበር፡ ንኩሉ ደላይ ፍትሒ ዝኾነ ኤርትራዊ ዝምልከት ጉዳይ ዝለዝኾነ ኣብዚ ተመዲቡ ዘሎ ዕለት ኩላትና ንክንሳተፎ ብክብሪ ንዕድም። እዚ ሰልፊ’ዚ መቀጸልታ ናይቲ ብጽሑፍ ናብ ከንቲባ ህይስተን ዝቀረበ ጥርዓና ምኻኑ እንዳሓበርና ከንቲባ ህይስተን ኩሉ ዝግባእ ዘበለ ምትሕብባር ትገብረልና ከምዘላ በዚ ኣጋጣሚ ንሕብር ኣለና።

ተደላይነት ናይዚ ሰልፊ’ዚ ዝያዳ ነቲ ጉዳይ ምእንቲ ክቀላጠፍን ነቶም ገበነኛታት'ውን ኣብ ሕጊ ንምቕራብ ተወሳኺ ተጽዕኖ ክፈጥር ይክእል እዩ ኢልና ስለ ዝኣመና ኢዩ። ካብ ሰብ ሞያውን ሰልፊ ግበሩ ዝብል ምኽርን ምዕዶን ስለ ዝረከብና ነዚ ስጉምቲ እዚ ክንወስድ ወሲና።

ንሰላማዊ ሰልፊ ዘድሊ ኩሉ ቅጥዕታት ኣማሊእና ነሓሰ 16 2010 (August 16,  2010) ንግሆ ሰዓት 10 ኣብ ኣፍደገ ቤት ጽሕፈት ከንቲባ ህስተን ሰለማዊ ሰልፊ ክንገብር ምኻና ንኩሉ ኤርትራዊ ብትሕትና ንሕብር። ናብ ከንቲባ ህስተን ዝተላእከ ጥርዓን እዚ ዝስዕብ እዩ።

Dear Mayor,

The Eritrean American Organization for Justice Democracy and Development are writing to you to bring to your Excellency’s attention to the attack of an Eritrean Journalist, Mr.Tedros Menghistu Wondefrash,by the supporters of the Eritrean  president Isaias Afewerki.Mr Tedrose Menghistu is the Publisher and editor of Selam, a Tigrinyan- language, monthly news letter printed in Houston The event was advertised locally in printed flyers and on the pro- government Dehai.org web site as a” public seminar” for all Eritreans in Houston and environs. The event was scheduled to begin at noon on May 9 at the Crown Reception Hall. Before it began, the organizers saw Tederos, who was well-known among the group for his critical reporting on the Eritrean government, and urged crowd to force Mr. Tedrose to leave the room and a group of up to 20 assailants punched and scratched him, breaking his eye glasses and stealing his notebook and tape recorder and he later went to a hospital emergency room after suffering abrasions on his face and head and injuring his neck. The attackers returned his broken eye glasses and notebook but not his tape recorder as Houston police arrived on the scene and briefly interviewed Tederos, and others. Mr. Tedreros is still seeking medical treatment for his neck injury.

Mayor Parker, fellow Eritrean American’s across the country are aware of this violation of justice and are concerned about this attack on Mr. Menghistu. There is also growing concern that the delayed response by the city on these attackers will send a message, both locally and nationally, that such crimes are tolerated. Equally important, it also opens the door to future attacks and a continued violation of the freedom of speech. A reporter, regardless of his political persuasion, should be able to attend an open meeting without being brutally attacked.

We are deeply concerned by the crime commuted against Mr. Tedrose Menghistu by the supporters of the Eritrean government. To attack or to kill a journalist in Eritrea is a normal duty of the government of Isayas Afework and his followers. However we didn’t expect to see this kind of crime in Houston, this is a direct assault on freedom of the press and also disrespect to the Constitution of this great nation.
Therefore, we strongly condemn the criminal act taken by the supporters of the government of Eritrea. And we call upon your Excellency to take strong measure to bring these criminals to justice.
