By Release Eritrea

(Cairo, Feb 01, 2011) Release Eritrea has just received disturbing news of serious threats to Eritrean and other Africa immigration detainee’s safety amidst the disorder during the protests in Egypt.

Many police officers are said to be facing threats from the public and have gone into hiding leaving police stations unguarded. In the city of Rafa, Bedouins, are said to have, burnt down several police stations and are currently in charge of the prison cells, where many immigration detainees are being held.

We have received reports from reliable sources that some Eritrean prisoners have managed to escape from prison but are lost in the Sinai desert while attempting to cross into Israel. Some are still in prison fearing for their lives because they believe it is a matter of time before the Bedouins take them hostage for ransom.

Release Eritrea requests that all concerned Christians fervently pray for the safety of Eritrean refugees during this political turmoil in Egypt. The charity also calls on the UNHCR and other humanitarian organisations to protect the refugees and secure their safety as a matter of urgency.

Release Eritrea is a registered human rights charity that works for the respect of religious rights. In Egypt the charity has been working with immigration detainees.
