EU to Put Pressure on Eritrea
The EU parliament is increasing the pressure on the Eritrean government to free Swedish-Eritrean journalist Dawit Isaak. The president of the European parliament is now demanding that he will be released along with the other journalists arrested in the country in 2001.
Current president of the parliament, Jerzy Buzek, will now draft a letter where the demand is made which will be handed over to the Eritrean government by the Belgian Commissioner Louis Michel.
If no actions are made to release Isaak after this, the hope is that the matter will be put before the new president and foreign secretary of the EU.
The two Swedish Left Party EU MPs, Eva Britt Svensson and Olle Schmidt, who brought the Isaak-question to the parliament's attention, are now also planning to hold a seminar on the topic in the EU parliament in the beginning of December.
Dawit Isaak was arrested in Eritrea in 2001 where he was working for the independent press.
