Over the last few days, we have been looking into the reports of the death of 13 Eritrean youth who were attempting to escape from Eritrea and were allegedly shot and killed by PFDJ guards who strictly adhere to the shot-to-kill policy of the regime.
There are conflicting reports as to the exact point of the shooting itself, though we have been able to establish that 16 Eritrean youth of varying ages had left their homes at about the month of September and that they had followed a commonly used Ghinda-Port Sudan route to escape from the country.
Of the 13 youth who lost their lives three were siblings, all daughters of former fighters. At least one of the victim's father is a colonel.
We have not been able to determine with certainty on the exact number of family members of current or former PFDJ authorities who were killed during the alleged shooting. There are no reports of the whereabouts of the three other escapees.
