About Andebrhan Welde Giorgis

Ambassador Andebrhan Welde Giorgis is Senior Expert in the Global Governance Institute (GGI), member of the Board and Senior Adviser of the European Centre for Electoral Support (ECES), Adjunct Professor at Vesalius College, and Research Fellow at the Free University of Brussels (VUB). He has broad experience as an educator, central banker, diplomat, international negotiator, political consultant and academic, with particular expertise in peace, security, governance, and development issues.    

Educated at the University of Colorado and Harvard University, he is a veteran of the war of national liberation and a founding member of the central committee of the EPLF. Further, he served, inter alia, as: president of the University of Asmara; governor of the Bank of Eritrea; member of the Provisional and the Transitional Eritrean National Assembly; Ambassador to the EU, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the UK; Permanent Representative to the IMO and UNESCO; special envoy to the African Great Lakes Region and special advisor to the president of the Democratic Republic of Congo; and Commissioner for Coordination with UNMEE. After dissociating from the Eritrean government, Andebrhan worked as Advocacy Director and Senior Advisor for the Africa Programme of ICG and advised the European Commission in preparing the EU Strategy for the Horn of Africa.   

Andebrhan has published several articles and a recent book, Eritrea at a Crossroads: A Narrative of Triumph, Betrayal and Hope (2014).
