Press Release: Eritrean National Commission for Democratic Change meets US State Department Officials

Among the issues discussed in the meeting were the process, wide participation and outcome of the National Conference. The Commissioners also introduced the National Commission for Democratic Change, the process of its establishment, its composition, plans and activities as well as the apparent needs it faces.

Message from the National Commission for Democratic Change (ENCDC)

A central task of the Eritrean National Commission for Democratic Change is to ensure a successful conclusion to the prospective National Congress by bringing the forces of democratic change to one forum and facilitating a civilized conversation among Eritreans. The success of the national congress will no doubt bring closer the demise of the dictatorial PFDJ regime and the day when our people’s vision for a pluralistic, democratic Eritrea becomes a reality.

ENCDC’s Ongoing Worldwide Meetings

In the past month there were many public meetings at different cities of Sweden, Germany, UK, Holland, Norway, Swiss, Canada, USA, Australia, Ethiopia, Sudan and other places. These commission public meetings were being held in conjunction with public meetings that were aiming at informing the public about Eritrean National Conference for Democratic Change that was held in Addis Ababa between July 31 and August 10, 2010. In these meetings, the public got the chance to gain the facts, listen to personal testimonies and answers to their questions about the National Conference from their respective representatives who attended the National Conference.

NC's Letters of Protest to AU, Libya and Egypt

We the participants of the Eritrean National conference for Democratic change in Addis Ababa are grateful that the UN Security Council imposed sanctions against the dictatorial regime of the state of Eritrea. We are concerned that the implementation part is lagging. We see the dictator Issaias Afewerki attending Franco-African conference in Paris and some of the regime’s ministers shuttling from country to country. We demand the sanctions fully implemented including barring of mining companies of foreign countries working in Eritrea giving life to the monetary stricken regime.

THE SUFFERING OF ERITREAN DETAINEES IN LIBYA CONTINUES

The Libyan authorities have released most of the detainees of Misrata and other detention centres into the streets of different cities. This may sound like good news but they have nothing with which to survive. They have no money, no food, no employment, no shelter, no medical treatment, nothing. Many are suffering the ill-effects of beatings, starvation, torture, dehydration and the like. These remain untreated.

EMDG’s Six-Points‘Proposal to the National Conference

For the past ten years the opposition organizations, including the umbrella organization EDA, have been operating without deadlines. A year comes and passes by with little change. Enough is enough! The cul-de-sac that the opposition seems to end up with whenever there “progress” is announced has to end. It needs to restructure itself and get out of this self-made trap so to march forward towards liberating our people. This is why EMDG is launching a six-point proposal campaign to set forth the main theme of the national conference for public discourse.

A CALL FOR ACTION TO SAVE ERITRAN ASYLUM SEEKERS IN LIBYA

Their attempts to avoid deportation by refusing to fill in the forms provided by the Eritrean embassy in Libya were met by brutal beatings. Those who still refuse to fill in these forms, which would have led to immediate deportation back to Eritrea, tried to avoid being hustled into military convoys by removing their own clothes and even, in some cases, drinking detergent since suicide seemed preferable. Unmoved, the soldiers proceeded to beat the naked Eritreans with their usual merciless vigor and sadistic threats.

Report on the Brighton Peace Conference

The main objectives of the conference were to ratify a Peace Charter that calls on Eritreans and the peoples of the Horn of Africa, including governments, civil society organisations, religious and community leaders and various institutions to take steps towards peaceful co-existence, and to draw an action plan on how to achieve objectives set out in the charter of expanding the peace movement to disseminate the message of peace among Eritreans and people of the Horn of Africa. The BPC was preceded by the London Peace Conference which took place 18-19 Dec, 2009. The previous conference mandated a London-based group of nine to draft a Peace Charter and organise a larger conference which comprised up to 70 delegates.

Grave concerns over the state of Eritrean refugees

Many of the refugees that were visited by Release Eritrea had serious bullet wounds that were sustained when they were shot at by Egyptian police as they try to make the crossing across the Sinai Egyptian border into Israel. Once caught, it seems prisoners are regarded as ‘illegal combatants’ and taken to military prisons where treatment is extremely harsh. Medical care is rarely available even to those who have serious wounds. Where free medical care was made available through charities that Release Eritrea has been working with, access was denied due to the nature of the prison system that often leaves prisoners at the mercy of local prison wardens. Those in charge declared the prisoners must be treated at hospitals authorised by them, forcing the prisoners to find huge sums to pay for their treatment, or forgo it completely.

Letter to the President of the Federal States of Somalia

Letter to the President of the Federal States of Somalia

Despite Somalia's current challenges, the Eritrean people still need your support. However I am very confident that your country will continue to show strong leadership on this issue and others, and for that you have my praise and admiration along with that of Eritreans around the world. Your support for the Eritrean people, for the fundamental rights of the Persons with Albinism, and for others, will not be forgotten.

UN Urges the World to Keep Eritrea Under Scrutiny

GENEVA (5 June 2013) – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Eritrea, Sheila B. Keetharuth, today reiterated her call on the international community to keep monitoring the human rights situation in Eritrea and to protect and support those fleeing the country, in particular the increasing numbers of unaccompanied children.

“I urge the international community to keep Eritrea under close scrutiny until meaningful change is evident,” Ms. Keetharuth said during the presentation of her first report to the UN Human Rights Council. “It will be important to increase efforts to constructively engage with Eritrea and neighbouring countries to improve the situation of human rights in the country.”

Egyptian politicians caught in on-air Ethiopia dam gaffe

Egyptian politicians are embarrassed after being caught suggesting hostile acts against Ethiopia to stop it from building a dam across the Blue Nile. ...

As the participants did not know that the meeting was being aired live by state TV, they spoke their minds unreservedly.

Their suggestions centred around military action as a decisive response to what one of them called a "declaration of war".

One of the politicians suggested sending special forces to destroy the dam; another thought of jet fighters to scare the Ethiopians; and a third called for Egypt to support rebel groups fighting the government in Addis Ababa.

Hundreds of Eritreans and Concerned Americans March for Freedom in Eritrea

Hundreds of Eritreans and Concerned Americans March for Freedom in Eritrea

May 24, 2013  Today hundreds marched in Washington, DC to decry the acute mistreatment of Eritrean people and the country itself by the self-serving and self-perpetuating government.  At the Eritrea embassy, the group found a counter-demonstration set up by supposed regime supporters, which had arranged things ahead of time, forcing the local police to set up a caged “neutral area” between the groups. The freedom-loving opposition side outnumbered the regime supporters by at least half again.  The vehemence of the oppositionists surpassed the other group, whose voice was primarily loud music, and which did not have its usual covey of children along.  Ironically, the regime supporters who were demonstrating against the oppositionists, were using the freedom of expression available here but not to any oppositionists back home.
