Ministry leader fears the regime is planning to purge 'illegal' believers from Eritrea over Christmas

Release International fears Christians in Eritrea may face a clampdown this Christmas after receiving reports that the regime is planning to purge ‘illegal’ believers from the country.

Christians belonging to non-traditional church groups have faced intense persecution in Eritrea in recent years but the harassment may only get worse in the next few months.

Selam Kidane, director of Release Eritrea, estimates that at least 3,000 Christians have been imprisoned by authorities in Eritrea for refusing to obey orders by the military junta to renounce their faith.

“Eritrea has declared there will be a purge of Christians by Christmas,” she told the Release conference in London.

Authorities take a lenient attitude towards Catholic, Lutheran and Orthodox Christians but have shut down other churches, arrested their leaders, and tortured and imprisoned some of their members in shipping containers.

Release said the harassment was levelled against those Christians who refuse to bow down to the final authority of the state.

Kidane said torture was “rife” in Eritrea. She described one cruel torture method used against Christians called the ‘helicopter’, in which the legs and arms are bound behind the prisoner before they are hung from the ceiling. Other prisoners are given the ‘Jesus Christ’, in which they are bound with their arms outstretched.

“What is taking place in Eritrea is now similar to what is happening in North Korea,” she said. “Eritreans have become the new boat people of our time.”

She warned, however, that Eritrean refugees were not receiving a warm welcome from countries like Italy and Britain, but were instead being treated harshly.

She appealed to Britons to show compassion to Eritrean refugees in their midst.

“Having fled persecution and having crossed the Sahara, they’re not safe in the UK either. Some have committed suicide because of the harshness of the treatment they have received here,” she said.

The Release conference also heard from a North Korean defector named only as Lydia to protect her real identity. She told of the brutality she faced from authorities in North Korea when she was recaptured.

“They kept torturing me. They tied my hands behind me and punched my face. The teeth I have now are dentures. They are not mine,” she said.

“They hung me on a pulley about five metres from the ground and threatened to drop and kill me. If they had found out that I went to church in China it would have meant death.”

Well, as some one pointed out earlier, it is the fundamental human right to worship whatever he chooses to as long as his faith allows others to do same. But the PIA's faith is not allowing others to worship their God in their way. I think he believes in Kim-IL-Sung, as he seems a perfect follower to this end. Hmm, why can't our people speak up and end this brutality. Even the derg was not this much cruel when it comes to worship. I remember in the late eighties, when I was a kid, we happily go to a christian church near coca-cola to sing, even when I was just a muslim. no complain, no arrest at all. But now, I have heard the entire member of a christian-pente family was round up during a wedding ceremony and put into an unknown prison cell. Only their mom was released for a reason I have no idea. It is sick and somehow we have become blind followers of Kim-IA wedi sheitan.

The government of Higdef has confiscated all the properties that belong to Awqaf institutions. They cannot elect the Mufti, instead he is appointed by Iseyas. Finacial help received from outside to rehabilitate aging mosques is taken by Higdef. Most of Koranic schools are closed and few remaining are forbidden to teach other subjects like Tigrigna, Maths and English. Teachers in religious institutions are made to disappear. Hundreds of ordinary muslims are made to disappear for voicing their concern over deteriorating situations. There are more spies in mosques than in bars, and you call that freedom of worship ?. Moslems in Eritrea are third class citizens.

DIA has done an excellent job in manipulating his blind supporters in Diaspora by using them to play the victim card. Just like their master whenever the jig is up they fall to the same trap & you find them making excuses for the evil acts that the regime is doing towards its citizens.
The sad part of it is, that they’re fully aware of the conditions under which Eritrean people are living, & it is very sad to see people enabling this brutal regime to continue in such a destructive & criminal path towards its people. We do not need the annual human rights report (although it’s good for purposes of exposing DIA in front of the world) to understand the magnitude of the suffering of Eritrean. And it's very sad to see people helping this devil of Eritrea do his devilish work against their own brothers & sisters. Very sad indeed!!!

Muslims have complete freedom in Eritrea to worship Allah. What is forbidden by low in our country is religious fascism and terrorism in the name of religion.

Persecution on the basis of religion is one of the tools the fascist regime uses to remain in power. Strangely, there are many ordinary Eritreans who do not differentiate right from wrong until get a personal experience on the issue. Freedom to worship is a universal human right. And yet, many of our folks are heard saying "this is imported" or "these are jihadists" etc, will we ever learn ? . If you are indifferent while 'others' are being persecuted, sooner or later it will be your turn. Lawlessness wont spare anyone.

By the way, who dare is to speak that christian and islam the main religions in Eritrea were orginated in Eritrea? Were not they from outside originally? Dos hadish zimehazikimo tarik alo iyu? The question in Eritrea pertinent to this issue or other human rights issue is the question of losing common sense and brutality from its heart. Some are happy when they see or hear an evangelical christian, who is Eritrean, are in distress bcz of the regime in Asmara.Don't give credit Isaias for doing your hearts desire. It is high time for you to think in civility and humane way.

Can you tell us the refusal of these churches for the registration? If yes, tell us when .But if you are simply repeating the modus operandi from the propaganda machines of the regime,i feel pity of you. For your information these churchs were submissive and willing in being registered and fully operational since long time. And particularly in the year 2002.Abey dea haki keyneghireka imber ni Nayzghi Kiful hiteto.Come back to your human senses if you are a Godly created human being.Stop living animal life by repeating the regimes lies as a parot.

The Holy Bible tells us to obey our kings, and in modern way of saying it is to obey our leaders or presidents. Does this quotation from the holy bible applies in our current situation?

Can someone tell me why these evangelists, pentie, behai, johoba, etc. refuse to register and practice their belief like the other registered Religions in the country?

-6 #6 Gezae 2010-11-12 17:19
The very current situation reveals that the permanent solution to Eritrean problems in particular and to Eritro-Ethiopia/East Africa’s political tensions and crises in general is governed by the with drowal of the Woyane army from the accupaid Eritrean sovereignty. Then errecting a system of consensus democracy inherent in Eritrean traditional politics that guided by an Eritrean-centric ideology.

Lets take Denmark and countries like that whic are small nations in size, diversity, language, religi on and above all NO THREAT from neighbourhood! But Eritrea with all sort of issues like threat from Ethiopia and internal problems, large number of people struggling for daily bread, politicians instigating trouble etc.THE GOVERNMENT IN ERITREA is a very vibrant, but is not 100%. I wonder if any other nation can handle this government as EPDJ does with the kind of problems we have on our hand. For sure, democracy to work, people should first be made to respect their responsibilitie s before claiming their rights

It is neither a lie nor fabrication, but it is the Eritrean people's passive reaction to the self-made president's lunatic acts that is the route cause of what is currently happening in the country. It is obvious that this man has neither the brain nor any humanity - he is simply a monster bully who should have been clearly removed from power by force a decade ago. He should by now be rotting in a shipping container - a cruelty he inflicted on so many of his innocent victims.

It is hard to imagine what is in the mind of this brutal dictator . He shoots from both sides of his mouth . In his resent interview he hinted that he tries to be as tolorant as Jesus Christ , but we all know that kind of talk is just to save his face .We need to pray to all Christians who are suffering .
This guy is an Atheist in my opinion , let alone to have a fear of God . Restricting people to worship and throwing them to secret jails is notthing like what Jesus had thought us . God help us !!

This is not the first time that evangelical christians are under clampdown from the regime. They have suffered long under this regime. One of the black history of the regime will be via-a-vis believers of evangelical christians . Meanwhile, the sovereign God is at His throne. At this time, everyone ought to cry out to Him.Heavenly intervetion will not only change this prevailing situation,it will also solve the situation in the country.Even at this time as the usual times, prayer is the key.Shalom Eritrea.

Concerning the jailing of evangelicals, I have heard so many "werazut" Eritreans ..commenting.."Isayas is doing good ..to these followers of imported religion. Let him rid the country of such traitors / shyuttat , ladies & gentlemen is n´t the orthodox, cathol ic ,Islam & lutheran also imported ? Mind you ,I am a foundamehtalist orthodox..but if the right that is awarded to me is not extended to other Ethiopians ..how can I live in peace with myself & others ???

Eritrea Media Sustainability Index, 2012

Eritrea Media Sustainability Index, 2012

The rapid advancement in media technology has opened up world media, making it increasingly difficult to conceal what is going on within the borders of a totalitarian state. Eritrea remains one of the few states in the world to successfully isolate its people from global information exchange. Under the slogan “Serving the Truth,” Eritrean media are managed entirely by the Ministry of Information. The ministry simply manufactures and disseminates government propaganda, stifling alternative views while protecting the country’s leadership.

But one Eritrean in Toronto, who has asked not to be identified, tells the CBC it was business as usual just a few weeks later when he had to pay.

Eritrean Child Prisoners Join Hunger Strike in Aswan Prison

Yesterday, a large group of Eritrean prisoners in an Aswan prison concluded a three-day hunger strike, in desperation protesting their continued incarceration without charge or trial.  They were joined by some of the young children incarcerated with their mothers in the prison.  The Government of Egypt has apparently accepted that they are victims of human trafficking, brought into Egypt against their will, yet they are not being released after many months.  The prisoners report poor conditions in the prison, and a lack of food and access to medicine and treatment.  ...

The Disappearance of Sudan

The Disappearance of Sudan

In this context, the renewal of Sudanese citizenship is vital if further rupture between the Sudanese peoples and, ultimately, the further physical disintegration of the state, are to be avoided.

However, and as the report contends, this renewal can only be achieved by ending the violence that is currently targeted overwhelmingly at marginalised communities; transforming practice, policy and law around the construction of a genuinely non-discriminatory and fully participatory Sudanese citizenship; and committing to the creation of an all-Sudan political and constitutional process that allows grievances and programmes for change from the margins to be heard and heeded.

Documents show Eritrea defying Canadian government by using Toronto consulate to raise money for regime

But nine months later, evidence gathered by an Eritrean-Canadian human rights group shows the practice has continued: As recently as January the consulate issued forms demanding payment for Eritrea’s “national defence against Ethiopian invasion.”

The documents also show the consulate is still imposing a 2% income tax on Eritrean-Canadians — a practice Ottawa had also insisted had to end after the RCMP and UN reported that those who refused to pay were subjected to threats, intimidation and coercion.

“We take these allegations very seriously, and are currently working to determine if the Eritrean consulate is continuing to disregard Canadian law,” Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird’s press secretary, Rick Roth, said Tuesday.

“We have clearly communicated to the Eritrean government our concerns both in Ottawa, and Eritrea. We expect the Eritrean government not to test our resolve. These actions, if true, will have repercussions.”

Independent UN expert stresses need to improve human rights situation in Eritrea

“I am particularly concerned about the increasing number of unaccompanied children crossing the border without the knowledge of their families,” Ms. Keetharuth said. “Children regularly mentioned dysfunctional family circumstances due to the long absence of the father, most of the time because of conscription, lack of educational opportunities and the fear of forced conscription into indefinite national service as major reasons for their decisions to flee.”

The Special Rapporteur voiced particular concern about the indefinite national service, the ongoing practice of arbitrary arrest and incommunicado detention in inhumane conditions and widespread torture, both physical and psychological, during interrogation by the police, military and security forces. Mere suspicion appears to be enough for somebody to be subjected to interrogation and detention without charge or without being brought before a court of law.

Anger in Ethiopia after Eritrea supports Egypt’s “right” to Nile water

ADDIS ABABA: Anger is fomenting in Ethiopia following last month’s statements from the Eritrean government over who has a right to Nile River water, which has become a contentious issue in recent years between Ethiopia and Egypt, who claims the lion’s share of water from the world’s largest waterway.

The Eritrean government said in April that it supported Egypt’s position over a controversial colonial-era treaty that grants Egypt a right a majority of the Nile’s water resources. ...

The Egyptian president, Mohamed Morsi, has highly welcomed Eritrea’s position towards Egypt’s “historic rights” over the sharing of the water of the Nile River.

Eritrean women face threat of abuse even after they leave: report

Eritrean women face threat of abuse even after they leave: report

April 28, 2013 (KHARTOUM) - Eritrean women fleeing their country’s oppressive regime are increasingly finding themselves the repeat victim of abuse, exploitation and violence once outside their homeland, a new report by a women’s rights group has found.

The deeply personal stories highlight the often traumatic circumstances surrounding women’s departure from their homeland, which is further compounded by economic hardship and ongoing rights abuses suffered in their host countries.

“Kedusan” told SIHA researchers that she fled to Sudan after her husband crossed to Ethiopia to avoid military conscription and she herself was imprisoned as punishment. After reaching the border she was handed over to a group of smugglers, one of whom raped her in front of her two-year-old daughter after they were left alone together.

She later fell pregnant as a result and although she says she reported the rape to the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR), she says she was offered little assistance.

She later managed to make her way to Khartoum where she found work, but when her husband came to find her he abandoned her after learning about the rape and pregnancy.
