The number of Eritrean refugees that cross border to Ethiopia has now risen to 2,000 per month. More than 54,000 Eritrean refugees are sheltered in different refugee camps in Tigray and Afar regional states fleeing the inhumane administration in Asmara.

Although most of the refugees are young soldiers and students, many children, women and elderly are also flocking in to the camps escaping the hardship. Accordingly, the government of Ethiopia has improved the reception and handling of the refugees in collaboration with UNHCR. The facilities include scholarships enabling them to attend primary, secondary, technical and higher education.

Following an agreement between the National Intelligence and Security Service and the Ministry of Education, Mekelle and Axum Universities have granted scholarships to 121 Eritrean refuges from Shimelba, Asita and Berhale refugee camps in Tigray and Afar regional states. Students of Mekelle and Axum universities accorded the refugees warm welcome.

President of Mekelle University, Mitiku Haile said the scholarship would strengthen the brotherhood between Ethiopians and Eritreans. It would also help Eritreans to improve their knowledge and skills and take over leadership of their country. The Eritrean refugees who got the scholarships have expressed happiness over the opportunity given to them. It is to be recalled that the Addis Ababa University had granted scholarships to 120 Eritrean refugees a few months back.
