The EU should protect asylum seekers

David Cronin

Contrary to some claims, the EU is not swamped with refugees. The UN's refugee agency (UNHCR) last year requested help with resettling over 120,000 people. Only 7,000 of these refugees were accepted in EU countries. It is this lack of compassion that must be tackled if Europe is to have a fair system of asylum, rather than one that treats victims as criminals.

Situational Analysis of Contemporary Eritrean refugees in the Sudan

Emblem of a National tragedy, these Eritrean refugees graduated in September 2007 from the University of Asmara in Journalism and mass communications with B.A degree, within a range of one month all of them escaped to the Sudan. Photo taken in Khartoum in January, 2008.

On average from 50 up to 70 Eritreans are arriving to the Shegerab refugee camp on a daily bases, according to a Senior Sudanese government official in Eastern Sudan, http://www.sudantribune.com/spip.php?article25615. Hence, with this high influx, the number of Eritrean refugees registered as of July 2004 alone exceeded 50,000. This figure does not include those who evade registration in the refugee camp, according to some estimates their number could be in thousands.

On top of that, there are 148,000 Eritrean refugees living in protracted camps of Sita wo’ishrin, Wedisherifey and Shegerab, since pre-independence period. Nevertheless, with all the short comings, the government and people of Sudan deserve acknowledgement for their generosity and hospitality in embracing these refugees for several decades.

A Call to All Young Eritreans

Eritrean Youth Global Movement

In an effort to address the aforementioned challenges, particularly of organizing youths to stand for their rights and that of their people, an organization named Eritrean Global Youth Movement came into being on the 20th of June, 2009. Through such initiative Eritrean youths will be able identify their challenges and priorities. Such initiatives would also enable them to establish a country with democracy and respect for basic human rights of individuals without any distinction. Needless to say, initiative of this nature cannot be a reality without the participation of each and every one of us. With the participation of all, the initiative intends to restore the faith and hopes of all Eritreans.

The Eritrean Global Youth Movement cordially extends its invitation to all youths wherever they are to be part of the change the Eritrean people desperately need. It is up to the youth to get rid of tyranny once and for all.

Four Ways to Help Africa

Place Eritrea on the list of state sponsors of terrorism. This will follow through on Mrs. Clinton's statements that Eritrea must end its assistance to al Shabaab, a designated Somali terrorist group.

Al Shabaab recruits young Americans to become suicide bombers. It also has turned Somalia into a haven for mujahedeen fighters from Pakistan and Afghanistan. The al Qaeda East Africa cell is based in Somalia and was responsible for the bombing of U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998. Mrs. Clinton laid a wreath in Kenya to commemorate the embassy bombing. She can help prevent a future attack on our diplomatic missions and citizens in the Horn and East Africa by taking direct action against Eritrea today.

America's Got Talent 4 Last Semifinal Round Recap

The final act was the Eriam Sisters, aged 16, 14 and 12. They are fun and entertaining although I found them singing a lot of unison, not harmony. As any serious singer knows it is actually easier by far for 3 voices to blend in harmony than for them to blend in unison. They should have used more harmony in their song, but this is a minor point.  Nick Cannon calls them "America's next pop sensation." Piers calls them "the next Destiny's Child." I call them going to the semifinals.

United We Stand

We can go on and on showing that in Eritrea, a country that is being described as the biggest open prison in the world, no body is being spared from one form of injustice or another. So, the opposition groups need to address issues soberly if they are to establish their credibility. So far they have not been able to expand their support base because the Eritrean people are very skeptical of the motives of these groups. There are many Eritreans who say, if not Isayas, then who? Thanks, to the likes of Ali Salim many Eritreans will not get over this kind of skepticism for a long time to come. So, let's have a vision of Eritrea based on wisdom, tact and farsightedness and work for the best interests of our people. We should fight against anything that endangers our unity. We should put pressure on the so called opposition groups to change the tone and objective of their political campaign instead of poisining the well.

Part II - The Conveyor Belt of Death in Eritrea

The Rope

The noose untangled itself

in total abandon,

aching to be where she had been;

with its legs spread apart

in pangs of birth.

The parallels between the Kunama massacre and the death of the maid are striking. In both instances, when a crime is committed at the top, its correction is sought at the bottom – by committing more crimes. When the late Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ali Said Abdullah, impregnated his maid, his “correction” was to constantly harass her with the security who were following her wherever she went and to threaten her with “disappearance”, all to keep her mouth shut. And when she committed suicide by hanging herself in his compound, his further “correction” was to imprison all potential witnesses – those who were very close to her – for eight months. In the Kunama case, when an elaborate drama was staged to fool the public, the government was already aware that this grand staging had a structural flaw in it that could only be corrected at the bottom. The massacre at Mai-Dima was conducted to plug that flaw that could potentially unravel the whole scheme, thereby sullying the image of Shaebia.

The Evils of Dictatorship

All the aforementioned leaders lead a totalitarian dictatorship. Totalitarian means total dictatorial control. Movements of citizens within their own country are restricted. Citizens are constantly harassed, and if you try to travel from city to city without an ID card, you may end up in jail. The government bribes private citizens to spy on other citizens. Neighborhoods are constantly watched by these recruits and are known to report to government officials of any suspicious moves. Dictators invest their resources on the young. By brain washing and controlling the young and impressionable, they seek support and reverence. School curriculum is prepared and implemented by the ruling party. Religious groups are discouraged or completely shut down by the government. Private schools are required to submit their curriculum to the government. Mr Kim Jong Il of North Korea and Mr. Isayas Afewerke of Eritrea are examples of such practices and controls.

ERITREA MEDIA WATCH -Assassination attempt on President Isayas -US threats against Isayas over Samalia

As the Obama Administration threatens to punish Eritrea for its involvement in strife stricken Somalia, there are reports of an assassination attempt on the life of President Isayas Afewerki. Quoting sources from inside the ocuntry, two Eritrean Diaspora websites, Assenna and Asmarino, said the attack on the president’s vehicle occurred on August 13 on the road between Asmara and the Red Sea port of Massawa. The president was said to be unharmed. The sources describe the attacker as 43 year-old member of the national army, First Lieutenant Daniel Habte Yihdego. He was killed on the spot by presidential guards. The alleged attempt would come as no surprise to Eritreans and foreign observers given the government’s brutal and repressive policies. The Eritrean government has denied the report.

Eritrea Media Sustainability Index, 2012

Eritrea Media Sustainability Index, 2012

The rapid advancement in media technology has opened up world media, making it increasingly difficult to conceal what is going on within the borders of a totalitarian state. Eritrea remains one of the few states in the world to successfully isolate its people from global information exchange. Under the slogan “Serving the Truth,” Eritrean media are managed entirely by the Ministry of Information. The ministry simply manufactures and disseminates government propaganda, stifling alternative views while protecting the country’s leadership.

Eritreans in Canada say consul still demands cash from them

There are calls to expel Eritrea's top diplomat in Canada because he presides over a system that's milking money from the Eritrean community in this country.

Evidence obtained by CBC News suggests Consul Semere Ghebremariam O. Micael is again soliciting taxes despite a threat by Canada eight months ago not to renew his credentials if he kept at it.

But one Eritrean in Toronto, who has asked not to be identified, tells the CBC it was business as usual just a few weeks later when he had to pay.

Eritrean Child Prisoners Join Hunger Strike in Aswan Prison

Yesterday, a large group of Eritrean prisoners in an Aswan prison concluded a three-day hunger strike, in desperation protesting their continued incarceration without charge or trial.  They were joined by some of the young children incarcerated with their mothers in the prison.  The Government of Egypt has apparently accepted that they are victims of human trafficking, brought into Egypt against their will, yet they are not being released after many months.  The prisoners report poor conditions in the prison, and a lack of food and access to medicine and treatment.  ...

The Disappearance of Sudan

The Disappearance of Sudan

In this context, the renewal of Sudanese citizenship is vital if further rupture between the Sudanese peoples and, ultimately, the further physical disintegration of the state, are to be avoided.

However, and as the report contends, this renewal can only be achieved by ending the violence that is currently targeted overwhelmingly at marginalised communities; transforming practice, policy and law around the construction of a genuinely non-discriminatory and fully participatory Sudanese citizenship; and committing to the creation of an all-Sudan political and constitutional process that allows grievances and programmes for change from the margins to be heard and heeded.

Escape From An Eritrean Prison

Escape From An Eritrean Prison

Eritrea's human rights record has long faced international criticism. Located in the Horn of Africa, the country is home to five million people, but so closed to the outside world that individual stories tend to come almost exclusively from those who have fled.

Kidane Isaac was just 18 when he says Eritrean authorities arrested him for an unspecified crime. It's possible he was suspected of planning to desert military service. Thousands of Eritreans flee the country every month, many of them teenagers, to escape the

With Robocalls, Eritrean Exiles Organize Passive Resistance

From his perch in California, Sium tries to stay politically connected to his country. He marches when there's a local demonstration, contributes to refugee causes and posts on Facebook.

But there's always one thing missing. The people inside Eritrea don't dare to "like" his Facebook posts. And they never march in the streets themselves. For Eritrean activists living abroad, this silence can be frustrating.

So Sium had an idea: If we can't ask them to come out, what if we ask them to stay home?
