Journalist Dawit Isaak still in prison after more than eight years

Journalist Dawit Isaac, 2009 Sakharov Prize Winner

“It is a disgrace that he remains in prison and it is remarkable that the Swedish government does not try harder to get him released,” said Jesper Bengtsson, president of the Swedish section of Reporters Without Borders, and Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Jean-François Julliard. “Sweden should urge the European Union to put more pressure on the Eritrean authorities in the course of negotiating the new aid agreement."

Eritrea: severe persecution needs God's intervention

Today some 3,000 Eritrean Christians are imprisoned for their faith. Some are in underground and solitary cells whilst some are in 'secret' prisons for the 'disappeared'. However, most are herded into unventilated shipping containers in the desert where dysentery and inf ectious diseases go untreated. Torture is routine. (See amnesty org). Several Christians have died while refusing to renounce their faith, with three so far this year. Most recently, Open Doors reported that Yemane Kahasay Andom (43) died at Mitire Military Confinement Centre on 23 July. Andom was a member of the Ethiopian Baptist Kale-Hiwot Church (literally 'breath of life') linked with SIM. For 18 months he steadfastly refused to sign the 'recantation form'. Weakened by continual torture and weeks of solitary confinement in an underground cell, Andom died of malaria.

Security Council for finally drafting a resolution in which we hope will be soon approved unanimously.

Remember my chains

When you turn off the light at night …
In your warm and cozy bed… the love of your life at your side
The children safely tucked…their lights dimmed…

….Remember my chains…

During offering time…before the tabernacle…
As praises rise as the brethren gather
When supplications are offered and accepted

Remember my chains

The Role of the Diaspora in Enhancing the Possibility of Peace in the Horn of Africa

Should the Diaspora first focus in finding a more accelerated way of becoming an integral part of the ongoing American grand experiment or stay confined within the margin while being consumed by cascading events in the country or region of origin? This is not counterpoising two possibilities but setting up the parameters of the challenge to stress the choice being faced by newly arriving immigrants from the Horn Region like all other previous immigrants that had finally blended in into the American society empowered and integrated into the very fiber of the political and economic system.

The demonstrators came from Maiaini refugee camp – round 9,000 Eritrean refugees – and Shimelba refugee camp – over 7,000.

Some of the slogans which were prepared in five languages are as follows (English, Arab, Tigrigna, Kunama and Saho):-

“We are Political Refugees.”
“We are victims the dictatorial regime in Eritrea.”
“We condemn the statement of the Eritrean delegation in Geneva.”

“We call for the international community attention over Eritrean Refugees.”
“We call for a guaranteed international protection for all Eritrean Refugees.”

Eritrean refugee and famine crises underscored in talks with US officials, says Seyoum Tesfaye

Q. Can you name any negaftive factor that is hampering movement toward a bold diplomatic engagement?

A. There is the politics of shoring up your immediate constituency even at the cost of the long-range national solution. Rallying the believers and wining the argument of the day without any concern for the residual effect that will frustrate future relationships is endemic to Eritrean politics. We have to take this as part of the ongoing challenge even when we are now slowly entering the international playing field and our efforts, skills and ability to understand the rule of the game are being quietly observed. This is not going to be easy as the evidence already shows.

I take the two meetings (with all their shortcomings) you mentioned as the early stages of our venture to the outer orbits of the diplomatic engagements. For the EU and the US Executive leaderships to take us more seriously and consider us as a critical actor and factor in the search for a solution for the Eritrean national crisis, we have to demonstrate that we have a seasoned understanding of the process of engagement and we cannot impose our definition of politics on established international institutions. It has not worked for the ‘firebrand super-revolutionary’ Isiaias, it will not work for those of us who are struggling for rule of law, democracy, justice and human rights. We need to slow down, breathe deep and digest this point. In the long run, it will serve our people well

No Sense of Urgency among the Opposition

Missing The Target
Think of a hunter who has refined evasion into a form of art. A target – say, a predatory animal – is an arrow-distance away from our hunter armed with a bow and arrows. The man has no intention at all of killing the animal (for reasons of his own), but he has to go through the appearance of doing so to satisfy those who are depending on him to kill the predator; something that he has to do if he is to maintain his status and position among them. He has these six tactics he can deploy to his rescue: (a) He aims directly at the animal, but with a harmless “arrow”. (b) He makes sure his arrow lands short of the target. (c) He makes sure his arrow goes over the target. (d) He deliberately assigns the job to someone who has absolutely no idea on how to go about it. (e) He assures others that it is a waste of time because the animal is old and sick and is going to die soon on its own anyway. (f) He claims that he cannot shoot now because of the little “innocent” animals playing nearby (for fear of collateral damage). When it comes to finishing off the Isaias regime, most of the peaceful resistance proponents among Diaspora Eritreans have become adept at these six deceptive ways of “shooting” at the enemy.

Open Letter to President Barack Obama

For quite some time now the world has witnessed the sad spectacle of Eritrean refugees in their hundreds after facing the treacherous seas arriving in Europe. It is reminiscent of the 70s when thousands of war displaced Vietnamese boat people were in similar circumstances. The world watches quietly and does not seem to have learned much from the tragedies of Darfur, Rwanda, or The Democratic Republic of Congo, and appears to be at a loss as to what should be done when these human tragedies do occur.

The case of Eritrean refugees is a human tragedy in the making and the world is watching quietly. Their most common destination is Italy. Sadly however, their troubles are not over when they arrive. Having jumped from the frying pan to the fire, they are often returned to the place of their departure and thrown back into the frying pan. Why? It is somewhat of a complex and triangulated, illogical setup.

Billy Boy Ali Salim Is Back in Town Again

Ali Salim is a cowboy of sorts. But unlike fast gun hand cowboys he ends up shooting his own feet after every canter. He usually resigns to a remote outpost to convalesce from self-inflicted gun wounds only to reappear again to try even much sillier stunts. He is getting progressively stupid and ridiculous. That’s why people are having migraines due to what they call “Ali Salim fatigue”. The more they hear from him, the more they get bored. The few that get bemused by his ludicrous acts come out just for a good laugh. Nothing more; nothing less.

Whenever Billy Boy Ali Salim comes to DembenaDembekumville, a sleepy town with dwindling inhabitants, he does not carry a gun. And no body knows what his intentions are or who he is after. For that matter no body even knows who he is or where he comes from although people have never stopped from guessing. He could be one tough neck from the troubled Horn or a bearded man from the caves of Tora Bora with a lot of weird ideas.

Eritrea’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR)

Eritrea is a country whose national assembly has not been convened since 2002. All courts are corrupt. Any lawyers who are allowed to practice law can do so only in the government’s favour.

Hundreds of thousands of citizens are held incommunicado in prison without trial and with no legal representation, and no chance of release. Prison conditions are inhumane.

The report speaks of ‘the Eritrean people having a long tradition of honouring human dignity’. How dignified is to be tortured without reason; to be raped by security forces, military commanders and prison guards; to go hungry every day of your life whether you are a child, a woman, a man or elderly; to be threatened or to have your family threatened if you do not toe the line in every respect? There is no dignity in a totalitarian country. Isaias Afewerki is a dictator with a long tradition of cruelty and dishonesty.

All of the above has been documented and can be checked and verified so long as one does not have the misfortune to be actually living in Eritrea, where it is illegal to leave.

The Rule of Law in Eritrea

The sad part is that we have an opposition that is unable to see something good, if not prefect, albeit not of its own creation in the ratified constitution. It is oblivious to the fact that it is much easier to rally the people inside Eritrea behind the ratified constitution. It is unaware to the fact that the international democratic force can be an effective advocate for the implementation of the constitution. All our grievances be it freedom of the press, religion, association and movement; respect of property rights and due process of law can be handled by a simple message that all Eritreans to the last person can propagate – implement the constitution.

It appears that the outright rejection of the constitution has become a shackle on the neck of the opposition. The rejection of the ratified constitution by many has completely left the opposition paralyzed. It simply does not have a coherent message. Hence the constant and petty squabbling and the non stop reorganizing and splitting. The PFDJ is equipped with a mindset that is engrossed in envy and hatred of educated Eritreans. The opposition should do its best to avoid an affliction of such grave malady. We should celebrate success and great works of Eritreans; and the constitution authored by Dr. Bereket and his colleagues is a work of great acclaim.

Eritreans in Canada say consul still demands cash from them

Eritreans in Canada say consul still demands cash from them

There are calls to expel Eritrea's top diplomat in Canada because he presides over a system that's milking money from the Eritrean community in this country.

Evidence obtained by CBC News suggests Consul Semere Ghebremariam O. Micael is again soliciting taxes despite a threat by Canada eight months ago not to renew his credentials if he kept at it.

But one Eritrean in Toronto, who has asked not to be identified, tells the CBC it was business as usual just a few weeks later when he had to pay.

Eritrean Child Prisoners Join Hunger Strike in Aswan Prison

Eritrean Child Prisoners Join Hunger Strike in Aswan Prison

Yesterday, a large group of Eritrean prisoners in an Aswan prison concluded a three-day hunger strike, in desperation protesting their continued incarceration without charge or trial.  They were joined by some of the young children incarcerated with their mothers in the prison.  The Government of Egypt has apparently accepted that they are victims of human trafficking, brought into Egypt against their will, yet they are not being released after many months.  The prisoners report poor conditions in the prison, and a lack of food and access to medicine and treatment.  ...

The Disappearance of Sudan

The Disappearance of Sudan

In this context, the renewal of Sudanese citizenship is vital if further rupture between the Sudanese peoples and, ultimately, the further physical disintegration of the state, are to be avoided.

However, and as the report contends, this renewal can only be achieved by ending the violence that is currently targeted overwhelmingly at marginalised communities; transforming practice, policy and law around the construction of a genuinely non-discriminatory and fully participatory Sudanese citizenship; and committing to the creation of an all-Sudan political and constitutional process that allows grievances and programmes for change from the margins to be heard and heeded.

Escape From An Eritrean Prison

Escape From An Eritrean Prison

Eritrea's human rights record has long faced international criticism. Located in the Horn of Africa, the country is home to five million people, but so closed to the outside world that individual stories tend to come almost exclusively from those who have fled.

Kidane Isaac was just 18 when he says Eritrean authorities arrested him for an unspecified crime. It's possible he was suspected of planning to desert military service. Thousands of Eritreans flee the country every month, many of them teenagers, to escape the

With Robocalls, Eritrean Exiles Organize Passive Resistance

From his perch in California, Sium tries to stay politically connected to his country. He marches when there's a local demonstration, contributes to refugee causes and posts on Facebook.

But there's always one thing missing. The people inside Eritrea don't dare to "like" his Facebook posts. And they never march in the streets themselves. For Eritrean activists living abroad, this silence can be frustrating.

So Sium had an idea: If we can't ask them to come out, what if we ask them to stay home?

African Heads of States Challenged About Human Trafficking in the Sinai

In a moving presentation focusing on the narrative of a young victim of trafficking who died leaving her toddler son, in the hands of her abductors; Meron challenged every head of state present to respond to the plight of countless victims and address this shameful issue taking place in the region.

In his own presentation President Omer Hassan al-Bashir admitted that the concern is indeed a grave one that requires urgent attention. For his part president Paul Kagame also made a personal commitment to highlighting this concern at the UN Security Council, over the coming few months.
