Fessahaye Woldu writing on Awate.com ("Fetishizing Ghedli - My Take: A matter of perspective") attempts to score points against those who responded or criticized Yosef G.Hiwot's article entitled "Romantizing Ghedli", by being mean, sarcastic, and worst of all, by attempting to appear to be more intellectual than those he is criticizing. Whatever happened to simply and honestly saying I do not agree with the opinion of the writer? It is a decent thing to do; it is not only more respectful to the other person but to oneself as well.

The Tewahdos' Complicity in the Demise of their Church An all out assault against the Tewahdo Church has now been going on for years: its reform-minded pastors thrown behind bars; thousands of its youth prohibited from attending Sunday School; its Patriarch vilified, demoted and house-arrested; its monasteries raided ("giffa") in utter contempt to tradition and religion; its priests and monks forcefully conscripted into the army; its administrative body overtaken by a layman; its leaders hand-picked by the Isaias regime; its progress in reform totally reversed by regressive forces; its very structure drastically altered from top to bottom to fit Shaebia's evil designs; its body isolated from its parental Coptic Church in Alexandria; etc. Yet, among the Tewahdos, no sense of outrage can be detected; none at all. It is as if all this is happening to an entity totally alien to themselves; they perversely keep watching from a distance as this tragedy keeps unfolding in front of their eyes. The confusion, indifference, paralysis and apathy displayed by this population group has no parallel among all the religious groups in the nation. Despite the fact that Shaebia has consistently shown that it holds the Tewahdos in the highest contempt imaginable, it is this very population group that remains beholden to that romantic image of ghedli the most, and keeps allowing this criminal organization to conduct one social experimentation after another upon itself with impunity; all in the name of " Eritrea."

Coming Monday, May 5, around 13 Eritrean political organisations, 'religious leaders', individuals and invited representatives of Eritrean civic societies will congregate in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to discuss…; yes to discuss what? The organising party is the Eritrean Democratic Alliance (EDA), an on-and-off network of 13 religious and secular political parties that have been fighting the Eritrean regime for the last 17 or less years without any tangible success so far. The agenda of the conference or the title/theme of the meeting is not yet disclosed. However, deducing earlier statements of EDA-members leads to agenda points as power sharing, religious or secular law, ethnical and regional autonomy and method of struggle; armed or peaceful struggle. Except the 13 political organisations, all the other participants will have an observer status; this means they have no right to vote on resolutions with far-reaching consequences for the Eritrean people. It is not yet clear whether the Ethiopian Government will participate in the conference that will kick off on Tuesday, May 5 and will last until May 11. Seventeen days later another conference will take place but this time no invited 'religious leaders', individuals or representatives of civic societies are allowed. This conference will be serious and is only for 4x13 = 52 leaders of the 13 political organisations that form the EDA. The result of that conference is essential to tell if EDA has any chance of coming back out of the year old coma. Others contend that EDA was born in coma in 1999 has been in coma ever since; except for the changes of its names and or the venues of its annual meetings. For many bystanders, these annual meetings are the only sign of the EDA's existence. In between the meetings, the EDA leaders return to their individual partisan huts watching one another with deep-seated suspicion and antagonism that makes their collective effort none but a PR-exercise at best.

A Cursory and Partial Historical Account on Eritrea as an Entity of Collective Identity What is an Identity? Eritrea is an Identity! In one way or another, all African states were creations of European colonialism and Eritrea is not an exception. Eritrea as an entity of identity was a state created and named by Italian colonialism. In an attempt to present a brief exposition on the development of Eritrea as an entity of identity for those who have not got it yet, it is helpful to go through step-wise cursory accounts of Eritrea’s historical and juridical colonial background. Towards that end, it is an historical fact that at different times in their long history, Eritreans had attempted to or had expelled invaders and colonizers alike from their territory, the last of which was Ethiopian colonialism. With the utter defeat of the Ethiopian colonial army, Eritrea’s long awaited independence was secured in 1991 when the EPLA entered Eritrea’s capital, Asmara. Rather than declare immediate independence after the liberation of Asmara, the EPLF announced that a referendum on Eritrea’s independence would be held after a two-year period. In April 1993, with the full support of the Transitional Government of Ethiopia, an internationally supervised referendum was carried out on Eritrean independence. As a result, more than 99% of Eritreans voted for full Eritrean sovereignty and dejure independence was declared on May 24th 1993.

Eritrean-Americans Support and Vote-for Barack Obama! I have been following the campaign for the American Presidential nominee, on the democratic side, mainly via CNN and website reports with great interest and enthusiasm. And I must confess that I am inspired, and “fired up and ready to go” for those two phenomenal couple-Barack and Michelle Obama. Michelle’s theory of the “shifting bar” is an exact characterization of events that we all experience one way or another in our life time. The difference from one individual to another is just simply its impact, and the frequency of it. Michell's speech can be watched on “You-Tube", and it is, indeed worth watching.

I really admire you for your dedication to find a solution to the Eritrean crisis. I have read with great attention and interest the articles you recently published in three parts. I also remember reading the open letter you addressed to Ato Isayas Afewerki in www.awate.com. We met in London after a meeting sometime back and had a brief but useful discussion.
